Introduction

Rationale

As most people spend at least one-third of their time in his/her bedroom, it is crucial to provide a comfortable, relaxing area for them to enjoy their spare time.

Origin of ideas

We do believe that technology can be applied to upgrade our standard and quality of living.  Henceforth, we rethink the vital things we do every day and strive to apply the intelligence of information technology to our daily life.

Creations

Miss Smarties

Miss Smarties is suitable for small bedrooms.  It helps to save space during daytime because it can be flipped to the wall when you do not need it.  Moreover, hidden shelves and tables are added to save space.   It also includes an automatic lighting system in which lights in the room will be switched on or off automatically

Besides, it can also be used as a tatami, on which you can play, have your meal, or even do your work!

Mrs. Broom (left)

Mrs. Broom has three functions - vacuuming, cleaning, mopping and ceiling-cleaning. She can begin the cleaning process and move by itself fully automatically until the whole floor cleaning process is completed.

There are 2 touch sensors in both the front and back part of Mrs. Broom.  If the touch sensor in the front touches the wall, the car will move backward while at the same time turning at a defined angle.  On the contrary, if the touch sensor at the back touches the wall, it will move forward while turning at a certain angle.  This action repeats and repeats until she finishes cleaning the whole bedroom.

When the curtain detects sunlight, it will open automatically and let sunshine enter the room.  On the contrary, it will shut if it is a rainy or cloudy day.  We have added an axie and some hooks to the curtain, so it can move smoothly.

When the light sensor detects a reflection which is higher than 70, the curtain will move automatically.  The solar panel is used to charge battery for the RCX, so it can save electricity as well as protect the environment.

Feelings

We benefited a lot from this LEAD programme.  Through making our robots, we learnt to cooperate with each other and listen to others' opinions.  Although we encountered some difficulties, we learnt how to solve the problems and learnt not to give up.  We were proud of ourselves upon seeing our final products.  We also gained knowledge in the following four areas:

To anticipate the difficulties and possibility of failure

To apply different kinds of materials wisely

To design robots which really suit people's needs

To enhance confidence when delivering speeches
