Job-shadowing Programme @ Hong Kong Arts Centre

In fact, the experience we gained in this programme is much more than what we have expected. We went to the office of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, where we met our mentor, Ms. Tisa Ho, the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. We were amazed to know that she was also a past paulinian too! Tisa was very friendly and she shared much of her personal experience with us. Through this job-shadowing programme we have learnt not only the skills and techniques we need for the job, we have also realized that it is important to choose a job based on our interests. Only by this, you will develop your passion, your devotion to your job. We think this is a wonderful experience and it is great if the programme will be held again in the future.

Job-shadowing Programme @ Vivaki Finance

On 1st of April, nine of our F.6 students went to the Hong Kong office of Starcom MediaVest Group for a job-shadowing programme. Our mentor Miss Tania Ng, representative of the company, gave us a chance to see what it¡¦s like to work in the financial sector. Unlike in formal talks, this event provided us interactive experience such as conducting credit checks on a potential client, calculating the profitability and commission rate for a project, and comparing business contracts. We were able to glean a clearer picture of careers in the financial industry.

Job-shadowing Programme @ Vivaki Media

Mr. Pushkar Sane, the director of the Hong Kong Office of Vivaki Media, proved to be a great mentor. During our visit, he gave us a brief picture of how it really was to work in the media industry. Mr. Sane¡¦s seminar was an inspiration to all of us.
Firstly, he told us behind all the glam, the core essential was to please clients with good commercials. We had to understand consumers, which required lots of research. This industry was not just about being creative. Secondly, Mr. Pushkar told us about the four Ps that we should follow when developing our careers: practice, persistence, patience and passion. Thirdly, our mentor encouraged, saying it was crucial for us to be imaginative and daring if we wanted to stand out in the industry.
All in all, this job shadowing experience was very rewarding.

On the 12 Feb 2010, Vivian Chau and Ivy Wong, both of F .6L spent an unforgettable afternoon at the Hong Kong Arts Centre for a job shadowing experience. Their mentor was Ms. Tisa Ho, the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. They were assigned the work of preparing souvenirs for one of the shows. While doing so, they talked with Ms. Ho, exchanging views on arts and cultural development in Hong Kong. Ms. Ho also shared the upside and downside of her work. Doubts they had about the arts industry were also resolved. The two had a glimpse of the organization and planning behind performances. Although the experience lasted only a few hours, it was a great chance for our Paulinians to learn more about the administration work at the HK Arts Centre.

¡§How to Maximise Your Potential? Why Start Now?¡¨ and ¡§Thinking Skills Workshop¡¨
Oct 5, 6: ¡§How To Maximise Your Potential? Why Start Now?¡¨

The Careers talk took place on October 5 and 6 2009, and was titled 'How to Maximize Your Potential! Why Start Now?'. The presenters drew upon their own education background and work experience, and delivered the talk in the form of sharing. The half an hour session covered the current global tertiary education landscape, with particular emphasis on UK/US universities' evaluation criteria. The talk ended with the presenters stressing upon the importance of developing "thinking skills" (critical, lateral, creative) and having a focused commitment to selective extra-curriculum activities.

Oct 14: Thinking Skills Workshop:
The Thinking Skills workshop was a follow-up session to the Careers talk titled "How To Maximize Your Potential? Why Start Now?". The workshop was delivered to F.4 students and lasted an hour. The workshop touched upon the importance of lateral thinking and multi-perspective brainstorming. There are 3 areas of thinking skills - 1) thought structures, 2) brainstorming techniques and 3) communication; and the workshop served as a taster session for the part of "thought structures". The presenters / facilitators drew upon their past experience with Oxbridge interviews and Ivy League applications; and led students through a demonstration on how one can adopt selective lateral thinking skills to better structure their thinking and deliver answers with an edge (both under examination and interview situations). The workshop was well received.
