Project
Abstract |
Tea
has long been identified as nature's medicine. Its chemical constituents
include protein, carbohydrate, lipids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants
and caffeine. Antioxidants in tea are polyphenols called catechins which
help preventing cancer formation. Caffeine, however, might cause nervousness,
irritability, sleeplessness, etc. Our investigation attempted to identify
a "healthy" tea with the highest catechin and lowest caffeine content. |

Project
Abstract |
This
project aimed to use domestic waste, like soft-drink cans, old pencils and
used zinc-carbon cell, to make a simple, inexpensive device that generates
electricity in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Coca-cola cans were used as aluminium anode and graphite rods from pencils as cathode. Experiments were carried out with different concentrations and combinations of sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride and sodium hydrogencarbonate as electrolyte. After analyzing the results obtained, 0.1M of sodium hydroxide mixed with 1M of sodium chloride (salt) was chosen to be the best. After modifications, the voltage and current output were 1.46V and 0.23A respectively. In conclusion, this aluminium-graphite cell is safe, inexpensive and environmentally friendly, as solid waste like aluminium cans and used zinc-carbon cells could be reduced. It could operate simple electrical appliances like alarm clock, radio, light bulb, pager, etc. The construction cost of this cell is less than HK$ 1.20 while the running cost is not over HK$ 0.20 to run an alarm clock for 50 hours. |
