Sharing on Science and Technology Seedlings 100 Plan

Throughout the year, we had regular lessons on Saturdays. Professional speakers were invited to introduce us to different branches of science. From stem cells in cytology and typhoons in meteorology to the applications of operations research, our horizons were indeed broadened. Furthermore, there were discussions and debates on controversial issues such as global warming and genetic modification, which encouraged us to think from different perspectives. This will, no doubt, help us immensely in the Liberal Studies subject.

Through visits to various places such as the HK Observatory and HK Science Park, we gained an insight into the applications of scientific knowledge in our daily lives. Our visits were not restricted to our own city. We went on an exchange tour to Zhongshan and Foshan, where we were able to discuss science education with our mainland counterparts. On the other hand, the tour to Taiwan provided the opportunity to visit recreational incinerators, recycling companies and hi-tech companies, which allowed us to learn about Taiwan's green lifestyle.

All in all, we were constantly inspired by regular lessons and excursions. We enjoyed this meaningful plan a lot!

Graduates of the 2nd batch of seedlings

Being a member of the 1st batch of seedlings, I attended 60 hours of lectures delivered by professors on a wide range of topics, ranging from industrial sewage treatment to eco-fertilizers. This offered me an opportunity to gain insights in different fields of applied science from experts and to exchange ideas with talented students who were also interested in science.

Alongside these, I had the chance to visit various interesting sites such as the HK Observatory and the HK Castle Peak Power Station, where I was amazed by how emissions have fallen through implementations such as flue-gas desulfurization (FGD). After a year of fruitful activities, I was given the opportunity to serve as a student mentor of the 2nd HKAAST 'Seedlings 100 Plan'. Apart from building on my knowledge and understanding of science, being a mentor further enriched my perspective. It is with much pleasure that I get to inspire the newly recruited 100 seedlings to a genuine appreciation of science.
