Visit to ESF Schools

15 teachers from St. Paul's Convent School were attached to Island School for 3 days (14-16 January 2002). And 21 teachers from St. Paul's Convent School and Shung Tak Catholic English College were attached to South Island School (ESF) for another 3 days (5 - 7 February 2002) . All teachers found the visit and lesson observations very fruitful and useful. Teachers from ESF Schools also indicated their interest in visiting our schools during the summer term to exchange experiences.

Observations at ESF Schools

Area of Curriculum Delivery
Island School
South Island School
English Across Curriculum

In Island School, a special time-table of one day per week is arranged with fewer subjects such as English, Maths and social subjects only to allot more lessons for English subject.

In South Island School, a special English Support Program is responsible by one teacher to assist English as Additional Language (EAL) students with lower standard of English language. EAL students can receive tailor- made remedial services throughout the school years until their standard of English meets the required level.

IT in Curriculum
IT is not commonly used by the teachers in the classroom. For the geography teacher who is in charge of IT, he uses whiteboard to demonstrate topic of water- cycle. He can use IT properly for he asks students to rearrange the improper steps of water-cycle and match the misplaced words with diagrams.
Project Work /Library Support Service

One librarian and library assistant of South Island school can provide a comprehensive resource pool and support services for students to conduct project research. Multi-media resource data bank such as research project guideline, CD roms, internet website addresses, newspaper clippings, etc. are categorized according to different subjects and titles. Both teachers and students can locate readily available resources for teaching and learning process.

The library is decorated with colourful and homely-designed Reading Corner with comfortable chair for silent reading.

The librarian is the person who teaches students how to do project work by utilizing the facilities provided in the library.

Teacher- Student Interaction in the Classroom

Students can behave appropriately according to rules of game of the classroom set by teachers concerned. The interactive 'two- ways' teaching style of teacher can elicit free and spontaneous responses from the students. This can facilitate effective communication between teacher and students. Teachers give enough 'think' time for students to explore various answers of the issue for more creative thinking.

One teacher assistant is assigned to assist regular teacher to supervise Form 1 and 2 students with weaker academic ability and ensure classroom discipline.

The integration of drama into formal lesson of Form 3 lesson can develop creative learning and improve spoken language of students. With active participation in class, students can present themselves and impress others with self- confidence.

There were usually no more than 20 students in a class. The students at times chatted with their classmates but basically they were on task. Teachers asked many stimulating questions and students were quick to put up their hands and answer them.

During discussions, students raised many related issues and questioned the teachers. At certain times, the students got very excited during the activity and became noisy, then the teachers intervened and calmed them down. Also, teachers would exert their authority to stop the students from talking nonsense.

Discipline of Students

Island School is less strict in discipline. Some students with loose discipline such as wearing improper school uniforms could be observed.

Contrary to expectation of loose discipline of ESF school, students of South Island school are well- disciplined in class and assembly. Students can attend lessons punctually, well-behave at school assembly, keep walking up at the left and down at the right hand side of corridor / staircase, etc. A whole school support system is administered to enforce strict discipline of students. Students with disciplinary problems, such as impunctuality, improper school uniforms, etc. should be punished like meeting the Principal , attending detention class after school or on Saturday morning. Suitable psychological counseling services will be offered to maintain proper standard of behaviour. Every teacher plays a part to detect problems of students and take appropriate action to enforce strict discipline of students.

Classroom Logistics / Setting
The seating arrangement in forms of semi- circle , square or rectangular can facilitate free interaction between teacher and student and discussion among students.
Learning of the Students

About 70% of the student population was local Chinese. Students with problems in English were sent to the Learning Support Centre for half a year to catch up their English. Teachers were trained in the ESL Programme so that they understood the problems that arose due to language inadequacy and would know how to deal with such problems.

Students received much individual attention during the lesson. In the Mathematics lesson I observed, there were only 10 students with a wide range of ability. The teacher walked around, giving individual attention to each student. At the end of the lesson, the teacher summarized the main points of the lessons by asking the students questions.

Other programmes that help students' development
During Form Period, Health Education, Sex Education and Drug Education were taught. In the coming year, the school will employ a specialist to co-ordinate this life-skill education.
