Waste Separation

The environment is deteriorating every minute. Hong Kong people produce 17900 tonnes of rubbish every day, which is about 1.4 kilograms of waste per person. These wastes are dumped into three major landfills in the New Territories, at this rate of waste production, these landfills will be filled up within 13 years. Therefore, to save our future, there is an urgent need for us to start using waste separation bins for recycling.

Waste Separation Bins

There are many waste separation bins in Hong Kong, for example, at the entrance of MTR stations, in housing estates and in schools. For example, our school has two sets of these bins as shown in the pictures.

Some students sometimes accidentally threw recyclable things such as bottles and newspapers into the garbage as shown in the photo. It is important that we make good use of the waste separation bins so as to protect the environment.

The government is urging us citizens to use these bins as well, below are some television commercials promoting the waste separation bins. There is a slogan for recycling bins in Hong Kong: 'Blue for Waste Paper, Yellow for Aluminium Tins, and Brown for Plastic”.
