Installation Ceremony |
The Installation Ceremony, which was held on 23rd September, 2015, marked the official commencement of the duties of the prefects and monitresses for the academic year 2015-2016. The ceremony began with a solemn prayer led by Colette Wong (5L) and was followed by an introductory speech by our Head Prefect, Tina Ip (5A). In her speech, Tina elaborated on the aims and objectives of the Prefects¡¦ Board, as well as the role of all Paulinians. Badges symbolizing devotion and responsibility were then pinned on Tina, Vanessa Ho (5L) and Anson Dai (5U) (our Vice-head Prefects), Prefects¡¦ Board members, school prefects, class prefects, class monitresses, I.T. prefects, careers prefects and environmental prefects. Then, Eunice Yiu (6P), our former Head Prefect, gave a retrospective speech on her work during the previous academic year. The ceremony ended with a prayer by Vanessa and Anson. St. Paul¡¦s Convent School¡¦s 160th Anniversary Open Days |
The St. Paul¡¦s Convent School 160th Anniversary Open Days were held on the 4th, 5th and 6th of July, 2015. There had been high expectations of these days, and in the event everyone was more than delighted by what SPCS had to offer. It has been estimated that over the three days more than 10,000 people came through the doors to see what the school had laid on for them. These visitors were a complete cross-section of Hong Kong Society, from senior educational and political figures, to alumni, principals and teachers from neighbouring schools, parents, school students, friends and well-wishers. There was even a large party of visiting mainland teachers who came to take advantage of this opportunity to get an insight into one of the top schools in Hong Kong.
Every single classroom of the school was filled with new and imaginative ideas for both the education and entertainment of the visitors. Each school class had taken on itself to present a class interest-based event and these ranged from ¡¥The 23rd century¡¦ to ¡¥Magic School¡¦, ¡¥Entrepreneurs and business¡¦, ¡¥Justice prevails¡¦ ¡¥Vanity or Identity¡¦ and ¡¥the Organic Classroom¡¦. The inventiveness and creativity were breathtaking.

Running alongside all this were subject specific presentations. In the IT suites there were media shows and, of particular interest to all, a robotics display. In the Science laboratories there were demonstrations of Physics and Chemistry, and in Maths an interactive experience to prove that ¡¥Maths is COOL!¡¦. The English Room had live student-led speaking presentations and a big display of Reverse Poetry on its large screen, whilst traditional calligraphy featured in the Chinese Room. Meanwhile, in the Home Economics department, celebrity chefs and students alike laid on Cooking Demonstrations, and many visitors were delighted to find that they were able to join in and produce their own tasty snacks.
Not that everything focussed on room presentations. There were also major performances going on at regular intervals. For example, on the 4th there was a grand Opening Ceremony, attended by Mrs Marion Lai Chan Chi-Kuen, JP, Permanent Secretary for Education in Hong Kong, in which the school show-cased a selection of student produced work. A part of this was an authentic Chinese Opera performance, and an award winning Korean Dance. On the 5th there was a Celebration of Success and some student-led sharing sessions about the school¡¦s Global exchange visits to places like Stanford, USA, Western Ontario University and Imperial College, UK. A lunchtime talent show brought together a whole range of performers, many from neighbouring schools, like SPSS, Queen¡¦s College, St. Paul¡¦s Lam Tin and La Salle as did the afternoon Winner¡¦s Concert and Joint School Variety Show. On the 6th things took on a more serious flavour with a Joint School Student Forum and University Admission talks, with both students and specially invited speakers coming to address the thronging crowds.

Everywhere you looked were the active and energetic young ladies of St. Paul¡¦s Convent School. Whether they were presenting the Art work on the fourth floor, playing music of the 21st century in the Music Room, presenting Science experiments or technology in the labs, working as MCs or performing on stage, or encouraging visitors of all ages to try their games, magic shows or freshly baked cookies, these young ladies looked and behaved like the future generation that Hong Kong both wants and needs. Schools are only as good as their students, and if these Open Days show us anything it is that St. Paul¡¦s Convent School is a good school indeed.

Joint School Student Forum (6th July 2015) |
On 6th July, our school hosted the Joint School Student Forum. One of the highlights of our Open Day, it brought together young people from 8 distinguished schools in Hong Kong, including Queen¡¦s College, St. Paul¡¦s College, Diocesan Boys¡¦ School, St. Paul¡¦s School (Lam Tin), St. Paul¡¦s Secondary School, DMHC Siu Ming Catholic Secondary School and NTHYK Yuen Long District Secondary School. In total, 800 Form 5 students participated in the forum.
Entitled ¡§How to make your dream come true¡¨, the forum was an opportunity for students to explore different ways to actualize their dreams and exchange views with each other. We were honored to have Professor Christine Fang, a renowned Paulinian and Professor of Practice at the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong, as the forum moderator.
The forum was divided into three sections, namely ¡§How to make your dreams come true¡¨, ¡§Hong Kong¡¦s Development in Relation to China & the World¡§ and ¡§Interests, Innovation and Business¡¨. At the beginning of each section, Professor Fang and our student MCs encouraged the forum participants to approach the topic from the point of view of the younger generation. Then, student representatives had the chance to interact with our guest speakers Dr. Jimmy Tang, MH JP, CEO of Prince Jewellery & Watch, Professor Wong Chack-kie, member of the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR, and Mr. Hilton Law and Mr. Gregory Sung, 2 young entrepreneurs.
The student forum successfully facilitated intellectual interaction among Paulinians and other young minds in Hong Kong. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Fang, our forum moderator, and the speakers for their valuable insights and advice.

Art Exhibition - L'Elegance de l'Art (9-18th January, 2015) |
10th January 2015 marked the opening of the very first Art Exhibition held at our school. Named L¡¦ Elegance de l¡¦ Art, it was dedicated to our school by the Art Department, alumni and students, with the aim of promoting art and nurturing an aesthetic sensitivity among Paulinians.
The Opening Ceremony began with Sr. Margaret¡¦s welcoming speech, followed by the presentation of certificates to the contributors and exhibitors by our Guest of Honour, Prof Cheng Yin Cheong, Research Chair Professor of Leadership and Change in the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). Visitors and guests then moved to the main exhibition room where Sr. Margaret, Prof Cheng and other guests officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which marked the opening of the exhibition.
The exhibition mainly took place in the Student Activity Centre, which was divided into three rooms. Room One showcased works by alumni, who are presently working in the creative industry. Their works were a tribute to our school and the people whom they had encountered during their years at SPCS, who had nurtured them and shaped them into the people they are today.
In Room One, there was also a heritage corner where old and faded photos were displayed. These photos, which had to be handled with extreme care and caution to ensure that the worn-out paper did not disintegrate, offered visitors a nostalgic glimpse of bygone days. In addition, there was a big screen opposite the heritage corner on which a video co-prepared by Sr. Josefina and Joanne Chan (Class of 1994) was shown. It featured a timeline of the history of our school and depicted how past Paulinians had paved the way for younger generations to evolve from great to excellent.
The second room displayed a series of artworks co-created by our Art teachers and students, based on the theme of light, water and time.
¡§People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.¡¨
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
Drawing inspiration from this, students created a minimal structure, which resembled Christ the King Chapel. The process of creating this structure allowed them to appreciate the details of its magnificent Roman-style architecture, such as the intriguing fine lines that described the delicacy of the facade, the conceptual approach needed to visualise the interior of the chapel and the depiction of the Paulinian motto on the ¡§stained-glass¡¨.
On display were also works by groups and individuals. These shared the same artistic approach ¡V realizing the element of time through different media and techniques, such as ¡§Fashion in Motion¡¨, which illustrated human movement in the form of animation, ¡§Carton Box¡¨, which documented how pieces of abandoned wood were transformed into a piece of furniture, and ¡§Waves¡¨, which depicted the changing motion of an ocean using recycled cans.
In recent years, many of our graduates have continued their study in the field of art and design, both overseas and locally. The third room exhibited works, which represented the most upcoming trends in art and design all over the globe. Together with some current GCE A Level pieces, these works demonstrated how art, craft and design could be intertwined to make skillfully crafted pieces. They were sometimes conceptual but, at the same time, functional.
Our school has always been on the cutting edge of education. Therefore, we now offer our students a diversified curriculum, including IGCSE, GCE, DSE and BTEC. The senior students¡¦ Art room on the third floor displayed their course work, which is part of these curriculums. Parents and prospective students had the chance to learn about the expectations of each curriculum. The Art room on the fourth floor was filled with creative artwork to stimulate and inspire junior Art students during their normal Art lessons. Works produced by Form One and Form Two students were displayed on the walls and hung from the ceiling.
All in all, the exhibition brought together different generations of Paulinians who share the same virtues and belief in life - Be all things to all people (1 Cor. 9:22).

Prayer Service for Sr. Isabel of the Angels Narciso |
In the morning assembly on 15th December 2014, all the staff and students solemnly gathered at the school playground to pray for the repose of the soul of Sr. Isabel of the Angels Narciso who passed away in the Philippines on Sunday, 7th December 2014 at the age of 95. She was the Principal of St. Paul¡¦s Convent School from 1971 to 1980. All those present were given a detailed history of Sr. Isabel.
Sr. Isabel entered the Philippine Novitiate in 1939, and taught in several schools before starting her missionary journey to Hong Kong in 1949. After teaching at St. Paul¡¦s Convent School for six years she then returned to the Philippines. It wasn¡¦t until 1962 that she returned to Hong Kong and started her service in St. Paul¡¦s Secondary School, as principal and supervisor till 1969. She was the principal of our school from 1971 to 1980.
Being a devoted servant of Christ, Sr. Isabel then continued her mission in Peru, South America, before finally going home to the Philippines. Although she suffered from illness, she continued to be active and to serve at a local school in Manila. In fact she only retired three years ago, at the age of 92, when her Superior told her that she had done enough and it was time for her to enjoy her retirement.
Sr. Isabel had a great character ¡X she was a teacher, an educator, a missionary, a musician and a poet¡K She had greatly contributed to the development of the school through her initiation of the building of the main campus that we are having lessons today. Sr. Isabel¡¦s passion for her mission and zealous love towards all Paulinians made her a very good role model for all of us. SPCS owes a lot to Sr. Isabel¡¦s love and commitment. It is because of her, generations of Paulinians can look back with pride on their achievements.
Throughout her life, Sr. Isabel has served Paulinians of different generations. Sr. Isabel¡¦s good-humour, her cheerfulness and her selfless love were deeply implanted in her students¡¦ hearts. Our present teachers Mrs. Diana Tam and Mrs. A. M. Law, who are the past students of Sr. Isabel, were invited to share in the assembly on their precious memory on her.
In St. John¡¦s Gospel, Jesus said, ¡§I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.¡¨ Jesus has promised that death is not the end because there is resurrection and everlasting joy in heaven what we need to do is to live life to the full so as to magnify God¡¦s glory. Now Sr. Isabel has magnified God¡¦s glory through her unconditional service and devotion to her mission. She is now enjoying her eternal peace with Christ. As Paulininans, let us imitate her good example in leading a meaningful life by working very hard in our studies and serving others wholeheartedly so that we can continue Sr. Isabel¡¦s mission in bringing Christ love to the world.
Then we all prayed and thanked God for the blessing He had imparted to all Paulinians through Sr. Isabel. Now she has finished her earthly mission, may she receive the reward in His peaceful Kingdom for all the good that she has done. May God also bless all Paulinians and guide them in the continuation of her footstep in living a meaningful life so as to magnify His glory.
After the prayers, we all sang Sr. Isabel¡¦s favourite song: Let There Be Peace
Sr. Isabel of the Angels¡¦ Requiem Mass will be held in Christ the King Chapel at 6:00 p.m. on 15th December 2014.
Let us continue to pray for the repose of the soul of Sr. Isabel!

St. Paul¡¦s 160 Anniversary Speech Day, November 2014 |
St. Paul¡¦s Convent School¡¦s annual Speech Day was held on 20th November 2014. It was a very special occasion, which allowed us to celebrate the achievements of our students. With the school entrance bedecked with flowers from numerous well-wishers, we welcomed parents, teachers, alumni and guests. We were privileged to have as our Guests of Honour Mr Eddie Ng Hak-Him, SBS, JP, Secretary for Education of the Education Bureau, HKSAR, Professor Roland T Chin , JP, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and Reverend Sr. Joanna Marie Cheung, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The ceremony began with a prayer for all the graduates by Reverend Sr. Joanna, followed by a stirring welcoming speech by our Principal Reverend Sr. Margaret Wong. The formal address was then delivered by Mr. Eddie Ng, who praised the graduates for their untiring efforts and encouraged all Paulinians to continue to work hard to keep up the traditions of SPCS that had been built up over the last 160 years. Mrs. I Chui, the M.C. for the evening, then invited the graduates and prize-winners onto the stage to receive their awards from the Guests of Honour. Teachers and staff members, who had served at the school for ten years and more, were also honoured on this occasion with Long Service awards. It was revealed that the current staff had collectively, a very impressive 1600 years of experience of working at St. Paul¡¦s Convent School, which was a great coincidence in this 160th year of the school! Notably, amongst the awardees was Sr. Margaret herself! A vote of thanks was then given by the Vice Head Prefect Asai Karin on behalf of the school. The celebrations came to a close with performances by the school¡¦s Chinese Orchestra and Cantonese Opera Club, followed by the Junior Choir. The evening ended with a rousing rendition of the school hymn.

St. Paul¡¦s Convent School Celebrates its 160th Anniversary on 7 & 9 October 2014 |
On 7th and 9th October 2014, St. Paul¡¦s Convent school celebrated its 160 Anniversary at the Jockey Club Auditorium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. With three major performances over the two days, and public protests threatening to disrupt the smooth running of rehearsals, St. Paul¡¦s secondary, primary and even kindergarten students and staff, responded to the extraordinary situation magnificently. ¡§The show must go on!¡¨ was the order of the day.
The performances consisted of a complete Musical with original script, music and dancing, which was choreographed by our students. There was also a full Cantonese opera delivered in traditional costumes and ably supported by the school¡¦s Chinese orchestra. In addition, there was a Parade led by each of the school¡¦s six houses and Kindergarten pupils. The Parade presented cameos of the many events that would take place in this Anniversary year. The wonderful alumni choir then rounded off the event with some spectacular singing. Of special note were the cute nursery pupils, dressed in nun¡¦s attire, who more than impressed the audience with their dance and other routines.
The programme was introduced in flawless English and Chinese by impeccably dressed MCs. They explained that the school had been founded in 1854 by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, a 300-year-old Catholic order of nuns that specializes in education through joyfulness, integrity, hard work and spirituality. As the school was originally the French Convent School and the Sisters came from France, the show was given the French name of ¡¥La Fete de l¡¦Excellence¡¦.
St. Paul¡¦s Convent School, its parents, students from all three sections and alumni, all gathered at the Jockey Club Auditorium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to celebrate another year of wonderful achievements on 8th October 2014.The event was doubly meaningful as not only were the successes of the previous year revisited, but so too were the accumulated achievements of the school on this, its 160th anniversary.
Founded in 1854 by the Catholic order of the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, the school has long been a provider of quality education in Hong Kong and has stood firm with its core values of joyfulness, integrity, hard work and spirituality. La Fete de l¡¦Excellence meant to demonstrate the fruits of these values, but what could it do now, with public protests curtailing its rehearsal time? Cancel? Postpone? With the disturbances at Causeway Bay actually closing the school¡¦s doors for a short period, the staff and students dug in their heels and became even more determined to make sure that their Anniversary show would succeed, and succeed well.
Introduced by well-presented MCs with impeccable language skills, the evening began with a performance by the school¡¦s wonderful Chinese orchestra. This was followed by the winners of the 65th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. Their renditions of poetry and prose, in both English and Chinese, demonstrated very high levels of language competency. The dancers were not to be outdone by the linguists, as they were competition winners too, and the stage was soon filled with spectacular prize-winning Modern, Western, Malaysian and Korean dances.
The school¡¦s symphony orchestra followed with a rousing rendition of Dvorak¡¦s ¡¥From the New World¡¦ Symphony and it then accompanied Soloist Ms Pat Chan in a splendid version of ¡¥La Vie en Rose¡¦. The finale came with the orchestra and the Junior Choir jointly performing ¡¥Amazing Grace¡¦ and ¡¥When you Believe¡¦ to the delight of all.
St.Paul¡¦s represents a unique combination of modern ideas and traditional values, which have nurtured, and continue to nurture, top quality students with Christian values.

The school¡¦s symphony orchestra followed on with a rousing rendition of Dvorak¡¦s ¡¥From the New World¡¦ Symphony and they then accompanied Soloist Ms Pat Chan in a splendid version of ¡¥la vie en rose¡¦. The finale came with the orchestra and the Junior Choir jointly performing ¡¥Amazing Grace¡¦ and ¡¥When you Believe¡¦ to the delight of all.
St.Paul¡¦s represents a unique combination of modern ideas and traditional values that has delivered, and continues to deliver, top quality results for the people of Hong Kong.

Celebration of Success |
The Celebration of Success programme was held in our school hall on 4th July, 2014. We were glad to have Dr. Cecilia Lam, CEO of Rehabaid Society, as our Guest of Honour. During the programme, student volunteers shared their experiences of the different kinds of voluntary service they had done during the DIP lessons on Wednesdays. Students who had joined the Switch on Dreams projects, namely Nurturing Cooking Talents with Hearing Impaired Peers, Medical Outreach Support for the Elderly and Writing eBooks for the Elderly, also shared their meaningful experiences with the audience. In particular, the Cleft Lip Service Tour in Dan Shui, China, in which our students worked with medical practitioners from the US, was most touching. Furthermore, the Form One and Form Two students did a presentation of their study tours to Zhaoqing and Tsinghua University. Last but not least were the amazing performances of sign language songs by our students and their peers from Lutheran School for the Deaf and the Tai Chi Fan dance.

The Ground-breaking Ceremony for our new green block - Smart Oasis |
29th June 2014, St. Paul¡¦s Day, was a day of thanksgiving for the Paulinian family. It was also the day when we laid the foundation for our new green block, Smart Oasis, on our school campus. The Ground-breaking Ceremony was held in the afternoon to commemorate the event. We were very honoured to have Rev. Fr. Michael Yeung, Vicar General of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese, and Rev. Fr. Patrick Sun, who is also a Paulinian, officiate at the ceremony. We were also pleased to have our recently formed Alumni Choir and our Catholic Choir lead us in the singing during the ceremony. The tea reception, which was held in our school garden, was an excellent opportunity for our alumni and other guests to share their memories of yesteryears with each other. Among the many honourable guests was one of our most outstanding Paulinians, Dr Annie Leung, a philanthropist and artist, whose generosity and active participation in various charitable events has made her a role model for many of us. The highlight of the day was the sod-cutting ceremony, at which Rev. Fr. Michael Yeung, Vicar General, Dr. Annie Leung, Rev. Sr. Lily Fung, our Principal Rev. Sr. Margaret Wong, Ms. Jacqueline Fung, Chairlady of our Parent Teacher Association, Ms. Anna Chan, representative of our Alumni Association, and Ms. Bella Chan, our Head Prefect, officiated. During the Thanksgiving Mass, which followed the Ground-breaking Ceremony, Rev. Fr. Patrick Sun shared his precious memories of being at St. Paul¡¦s with us. Many Paulinians stayed in the school garden after the Mass to catch up with one another.

Senior Inter-class English Debate Finals |
After three rounds of stimulating debates between Form 4 and Form 5 classes, the annual Senior Inter-class English Debate Finals, organized by the English Debating Society, was successfully held on 22nd January 2014. The motion was ¡§Whistleblowers do more good than harm in society.¡¨ We were honored to have Ms. Audrey Eu, SC, JP, Mr. Abdul Wahab and Dr. Sheilah Hamilton as our adjudicators.
This year, there was a slight change in the rules of student participation, with committee members being allowed to take part in the competition. The format of the debate followed the World Schools Debating Style, allowing debaters to make good use of ¡§Points of Information¡¨ (POIs) throughout the debate. This unique feature allowed team members on both sides to demonstrate their rebuttal skills and interact on a higher level.
Members of the Proposition were Jasmin Tsang, Karina Lai and Ashley Yu of Form 4L, while on the Opposition were Erica Kwan, Michelle Ho and Zoe Kum of Form 5L.
Side Proposition, F. 4L, clinched the championship while the Best Debater was Erica Kwan of F. 5L. Both teams received tremendous applause for their ample research, poised delivery and quick responses. Congratulations to the debaters for their outstanding effort!

Peace One Week |
From September 17th-21st 2012 Peace One Week was held in our school. This week long event was held in order to acknowledge and celebrate International Peace Day. It was also held to contribute to the Peace One Day Organisation and to mark Global Truce Day on September 21st. Over the week students and teachers raised awareness of promoting peace in various ways. Here are some of the highlights:
Monday 17th Sing for Peace
As Paulinians love to sing, it was decided that Peace One Week would kick off with singing for peace. The Music Society and the Catholic Choir joined together to create a lunchtime concert. Various songs related to peace such as John Lennon's "Imagine" were performed by Form 3 students. A song about peace especially written for the event was performed by the Catholic Choir and their beautiful voices filled the school campus.

Tuesday 18th Dance for Peace
The whole school turned out for the Dance for Peace event. All our students gathered in the playground. Over 1000 students swayed their bodies, lifted their arms and sang as the Form 1 students and teachers looked on. This collective activity proved to be great fun and allowed everyone to show their commitment to peace through dancing.

Wednesday 19th Write for Peace
Words are powerful tools for communicating a message so this time it was the turn of the Form 4 students to write and recite Reverse Poems on Peace. Students from each class worked together to write poems to promote peace. At lunchtime these students recited their poems that addressed issues ranging from creating a peaceful environment to global peace and harmony.
Thursday 20th Draw for Peace
Students from Forms 1 and 2 came together through the medium of art and calligraphy to show their awareness of peace. The Form 2 students had been making signs of peace during their art lessons and during a lunchtime ceremony officiated by Sister Margaret and our guest of honour Miss Sian Butler, an Assistant Principal of The Gateway Academy UK, the students stuck their peace symbols on a large banner posted along the back wall of the playground. This colourful banner visually represents the school¡¦s commitment to peace. At the same time some Form 1 students wrote messages about peace through the art of Chinese calligraphy.

Friday 21st Pledge for Peace
The Peace One Week culminated in a lunchtime ceremony in which representatives from each class delivered their class pledge on peace. Students from each class had worked with their English teachers to create a class pledge and these pledges were delivered and then posted up on the pillars in the covered playground for all to see. This event was rounded off by several musical performances by students.
Over the week Paulinians certainly raised their awareness of the importance of peace and harmony in the world. Over the rest of the year our students will continue to be advocates for peace and do their utmost to spread peace in the school, their family, Hong Kong and even globally.
